This is our current shot list for our video for what we have already filmed. We are unsure of the scenes we have to follow but know that there will be more of Molly & Joe but cannot plan shots until we have decided what we are going to film of them. Also, even though we have now choreographed part of the dance scenes, we are unsure of what shots we would like as it depends on how we want the audience to interpret the moves. For example, when she fails the moves and falls to the floor we may want a high angle to make her seem really inferior and in a low place in her life, but it depends on what the dance move consists of, as we need to make sure we get all of the move in the shot.

Using Photoshop
I have moved on to creating my website and digi pack So I am starting to come up with so far they are not perfect but there is from for development.
I started out with two ideas, the first one I wanted to look quite clinical and robotic which fits the meaning of the song and original music video; saying how she I only human, she's not a robot and feels emotions. I decided to invert the initial figure to create this idea. I then decided to add a glimpse of the original image in the second human title, which I feel empathises the robot overall feel. I've also included a geometric hexagon as a symbol that I want to include as a recognisable logo throughout my auxiliary tasks linking everything together. The reason behind the geometric is that I feel it emulates that robotic mechanical feel that I want to portray. It also gives a modern feel to the overall look, something I think my modern audience would appreciate.
It a working progress and I still need to work on making the edges of the images look a lot smoother feel, making it look more professional.
My second idea, perhaps my least favourite of the two (the bottom image) gives a more girly, cartoon feel which I feel does link to my target audience. I have included the same geometric shape/symbol again to create that robotic feel however, I feel the overall appearance has a far less modern feel, and does depict the overall message I want to portray, which I feel is shown better through my first option.

Choreography
As we started to edit together the filming we had done, we decided to incorporate some dance into our video, The idea is to have it relate to the relationship between Molly and Joe. Molly will be practicing a dance routine and cannot seem to get them quite right. (I had the idea to have her come up from falling down, with bruises like the ones at the video to represent this - then to turn and they are gone - as a foreshadow kind of thing). Then as the relationship becomes more of a strain, she finds the moves tougher and then she grows stronger and this will reflect in her dancing. Then at the end when she has kicked him out and is happier with her life and decisions, she will perform the dance properly and do everything well and perfect. These are the dance moves Emily chorepgraphed for the parts of our video that we want dance in.

Target Audience Analysis of Costumes
Question 1
Our character in our video is quite innocent and naive, she is a weak character that doesn't stick up for herself, what kind of clothing would you expect her to wear?
-The majority of the results from the survey said that she would wear boring and bland clothes that don't attract her attention, floral design to represent her innocence or cute clothes that are light coloured. We tried to incorporate all of these into our video but using very bland dull pyjama clothes, cute floaty girly clothes that represent her innocence. We knew an image we wanted her to look like but needed to incorporate the audience's ideas too as they are the ones we are targeting and therefore watching it.

Question 2
Question 3
Throughout the stages of her growing confident and stronger and her then moving on from him, what should change with her costume?
a) at the very beginning - most people answered this part of the question as her having very basic, bland, dull clothing on to represent her mood and unhappiness with the relationship.
b) when she starts to realise she is unhappy - this had a mixed range of answers, a few people said the clothing should get darker with heavier eye makeup to represent her rebellious side showing, some people said nothing should change at this stage and some people said that there should be gradual changes like little more makeup or neater hair or clothing.
c) the growing stages of her strength - a lot of results were that her makeup should become more bold therefore representing that she is trying harder and some were just that she should just look like she is putting more effort in.
d) once she has kicked him out - more bolder colours and more colour added to the wardrobe, also just need to make it neater.
e) at the very end - this was all similar results with everyone suggesting normal and bright clothing and how a regular teenage girl would dress and look like.
Question 4
Question 5
Overall our survey results showed what kind of clothing and hairstyles, etc. that our characters should have in our video. With the female role, we basically covered exactly what our target audience wanted with a range of different outfits to represent the progression and also little makeup and neat hair. The male role was slightly different. We used a leather jacket and dark clothes to represent his evilness but decided against the slicked back hair. We decided it would make him look more sleazy than mean and so went with messy hair which was the next thing that the target audience would have wanted.

Starting To Edit
here is a screen shot of us starting to edit on Final Cut. So far we have just started to put our clip in order lining them up to the beat of the music. We need to start filming our dance sequence which is a symbolic part of our music video, it represents her relationship. She is struggling to do a dance move = she is struggling with the relationship. She keeps falling = she is weakening in the relationship. She then practices more = she is becoming stronger in the relationship, she can then do the dance move perfectly = she is strong and over him.
Adding this sequence in we will have more to work with and can continue adding everything in place. We hope to start putting filters and effects on our film, playing with colour correction and the pace of the clips.

Target Audience
This is our glogster we produced to show the features of what we need to include to aim our music video specifically at our target audience.
Target Audience Survey Analysis
Question 1
Question 2
Question 3
Question 4
Question 5
Question 6
Question 7
Our next two questions required the participant to give an opinionated answer so we cannot show it in a graph but will give a few of our favourite answers and the ones we found most useful to our research.
Question 9
What scenes would you like to see included? (eg. fighting/arguing, intimate)
- Some of our best answers were: "not just the cliche relationship, mix it up, don't stick to stereotypes", "something abstract", "intimate", "kindness/caring".
Question 10
What is your opinion on domestic abuse and how do you feel we could appropriately portray it?
- Some of our best answers were: "don't show too much violence, just insinuate it", "it's an awful thing and so must be portrayed in a realistic way", "through lyrics and video symbolism", "do lots of research to understand it fully and look at both sides of the situation - from both points of view", "mimed drama or abstract contemporary dance would be the best way to show it", "try to do it in a tasteful artistic way and try not to portray it ever being okay for either a man or a woman", "as long as it is not romanticised."
Our results have concluded that we can do our narrative/performance music video with the storyline we want as from the results from our target audience, they would like to see it and wouldn't be put off by anything we want to include. A lot of the answers seem to show that they weren't that interested, eg. by putting don't mind, but at least we know they wouldn't not want to see what we want to put into our video

Update
So far me and my group have come up with a few ideas. In the end we choose to go with our Christina Perri - Human music video idea as we had developed on this one the most - we have came up with a narrative and have thought of scene that we could have in the music video.
As of now we are planning on costume ideas and makeup for our music video, coming up with each individual look for each character that we want to present to the audience. So far we have come up with the girl character wearing very innocent clothes such as pastel pinks and purples and skirt etc to represent her innocent character. We have also decided that we want our male character we be the antagonist in the music video. So we are planning to dress him in very dark colours such as black and navy. These colours are commonly used to present the'bad guy' in music videos so we feel this will easily follow conventions.
We also plan to create an online survey posting it on our social media to get responses from our young target audience.

Photo Storyboard
This is the opening of the video. The abusive boyfriend is hitting the girlfriend in their home, they have just had an argument about something, the man loses his temper. This foreshadows the end of the music video as we are doing the rest of the video as a flashback of their relationship.
Then it flashes back to the past and she is trying to make her boyfriend happy as that is her main priority. She is making him his favourite meal (beans on toast). She ends up waiting for ages as he is at "work" (having an affair) and everything gets cold - this annoys him a lot. Also, he comes home completely white boy wasted.
Then he gets really mad at her for letting the tea go cold. He blames her and threatens her, and then throws everything off the table in a rage. He shouts abuse at her and leaves the room.
She then gets upset trying to clear up everything and she is saying to herself that she won't tell anyone about anything and will keep everything to herself.
Then she is out in town or somewhere and sees her boyfriend cheating on her with someone else. This frustrates her and makes her extremely upset. Especially as they look so incredibly happy.
Then we end up back at the beginning shot of him hitting her and them having a major argument. In the beginning it appears she will just put up with it but then she changes her mind.
In the last chorus, she is going to kick him out the house as she is fed up with his behaviour and fights back. She stands up for herself and it ends up with her looking and feeling a lot more relieved and happy.

Controversial Music Videos - Why Were They Controversial? What Made Them controversial?
1) Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke
The blurred Lines music video was released last year. The video caused uproar amongst viewers. Robin Thicke got a lot of criticism for featuring numerous naked models, all surrounding him in a provocative manner. There are two versions made of the raunchy video - a completely topless version which was first uploaded to YouTube but then removed due to its revealing content, later it was uploaded back onto YouTube but flagged as inappropriate for viewers under the age of 18. The second version is still highly revealing but the models are more 'covered up' wearing skimpy underwear. Thicke has be accused that his song lyrics promotes date-rape but Thicke refused the claims. You would have thought that all this controversy would deter people away from Robin Thicke and his outrageous music video but it actually did the opposite. All the controversial attention brought viewers to Thickes music video and blurred Lines actually became the best selling song in the UK in 2013. As well as this it also become the most downloaded song in chart history.

2) Hate Me Now - Nas ft. Puff Daddy
The music video for the single was directed by Hype Williams which features Nas being crucified. When the music video was first released in 1999 the video caused uproar to a large amount of viewers, the reason being that Puff Daddy was originally featured on the cross in the first edit, Puff Daddy then demanded this execution scene to be erased from the broadcast and final edit, however, the wrong tape was sent to MTV and TRL then aired on the 5th of April 1999. Immediately after the broadcast Puff Daddy barged into the into the offices of Nas', he manager, Puff Daddy then stuck Nas' manager over the head with a campaign bottle. The video features very graphic close up shots of Nas be executed, and was see as disrespectful to many viewers.
3) Smack my Bitch Up - Prodigy
'Smack My Bitch Up' was banned by the BBC, resulting in the lyric free version being played on Radio 1. When the singles album was featured on the 'Chart Rundown' but the title 'Smack My Bitch Up' was not mentioned at all, it was disregarded. It was then later refereed to as just 'smack' and was not played. The Top of The Pops show then refused for it t be played due to it offensive content.
The music video drew harsh criticism for it's offensive content, it god lots of criticism for containing misogyny many feminist groups accused it of containing violence against women (however the main protagonist within the music video with in fact a woman). On the other hand many people praised the music video because it challenged that common stereotype that women are normally the victims within domestic violence. The video was both banned in the UK and US but through high demands on MTV they had them relent and show the video, but only after midnight, followed by an MTV news warning. In mid-2002, the full unedited version of this video was aired on MTV2 as part of a special countdown showing the most controversial videos ever to air on MTV. This countdown was only shown late at night because of the graphic imagery of "Smack My Bitch Up"
4) Closer - Nine Inch Nails
The music video for 'Closer' was directed by Mark Romanek on May 12th 1994. The video shows the event of a mad scientist which contained graphic images containing the themes of; religion, sexuality, animal cruelty, politics, and terror. Some of the controversial images included:
A heart connected to some sort of device; the beat of the heart corresponds to the beat of the song

Many viewers of the video found the contents disturbing a wrong, however, the video was successful and helped the band's success.

Grade B
Camera Shots
The main camera shot used within the video are:
Long shots
Mid shots
Close up shots
There isn't a large amount of difference in the shots. We mainly see long shots and mid shots and then occasionally some close up shots of the girl in the car. However, because it's quite a fun upbeat video the shots do not seem boring as within each shot their is a new person/character so the shots are not of the same thing the whole way through so, in a sense it does not matter that the shots are quite similar because of the different people within the shots. That being said, I think to improve it would have been nice to see some other shots maybe some over the shoulder shots, high and low angle shots, but due to the nature of the narrative being quite simplistic I can understand why these would have been difficult to incorporate into the song.
Editing
They have tried to edit to the beat of the music, as the beat comes they change the shot where we meet a new person dancing. They have also used a black and white/greyscale filter at the very start of the video. This creates a retro type feel to the video as it then blast into colour when the start of song starts. They also use a the editing technique of key framing which is quite fun and impressive and breaks the song up a little bit which gives a nice feel to the video. They have also speeded up a camera shot to fit the fast pace sped of the sing which fits very well. This fast pace editing is also in reverse, I feel this fits the song very well. at the end of the song they then use the greyscale effect again, coming out of colour, signifying the end of the music video.
The greyscale filter.
The keyframe effect.
The speed up reversed scene.
Lighting
Whilst watching the video i couldn't really see any attention to the use of lighting. All the shots are basically of the same level of brightness. The lighting is very natural looking. I assume that this is due to the fun nature of the song, so they didn't really have to focus on the use of lighting as much as opposed to a sad natured music video. However, I feel if they had paid attention to lighting it would have made their music video look a lot more proffesional and put together.
Costume/Hair/Makeup
Everyone featured within the music video are wearing very casual clothes. However, I assume that they has not planned costumes before filming due to the fact that they filmed random people off the street. However, the people featured are wearing casual clothes so it gives a very laid back, fun feel to the music video. which is what they were going for. Hair and makeup also relate to my last point in the same way.

Colour Correction Tutorials
In class we were given the brief for experimenting with colour correction on Final Cut, we then had to make an video tutorial of how to use colour correction. My and my group made a entire music video dedicated to colour correction, explaining how to use the tool. Unfortunately our data got deleted on the school system so I cannot show you our video that I had created however I am able to explain how to use the colour correction tool and what I does.
Here is an example of a shot on Final Cut being corrected, here we can see the overall look of the picture is more vibrant and warm. When colour correcting our shot we decided to put a black and white/greyscale effect on all of our shots then we decided to add colour into specific areas, creating a contrast which really showcased the possibilities of the colour correction tool. Below is an example of the sort of effect we had achieved on our original footage.

Andrew Goodwins Seven Applied to Music Videos
Andrew Goodwin's seven music video theories
1) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics - this means that most genres of music have certain traits and common visuals that are featured in the genres music video. For example, in the genre of rock the music video usually feature a lot of performance and 'throwing' of signs.
2) There is a relationship between visuals and the lyrics - Goodwin said that a lot of video will feature many images and gestures that represent the lyrics. An eample of this is Jay-Z 99 problems
3) There is a relationship between music and visuals - Goodwin said that there is a relation ship with the visuals and music meaning that the visuals will fit with the pace and beat of the song
4) The demands of the record label will include that need for lots of close ups on the artists - - Goodwin concluded that the best way for record labels to sell their artists is to include lots of close ups of them, this is particularly done with women artists, examples include Britney Spears Prerogative and Beyonce Single Ladies.
5) The artist many develop iconography that reoccurs across their work - Goodwin concluded that artists often include repeated gestures and actions through each music video they are featured in. For example One Direction usually repeat many hand gestures when singing with are very similar making them iconic.
6) There is frequent reference to the notion of looking - Goodwin noticed that artists also look into the camera to give a 'direct' approach this gives off the idea and feel that the artist is directly singing to us.
7) There is often intertexual reference - Goodwin realised that sometimes you will recognise lyrics and visuals referring to another text within it.
I am going to be applying these theories to different genres of music videos.
50 Cent Ft Olivia - Candy Shop
This song and music videos falls into the genre of RnB and Rap, normally in rap videos we see many black men being wealthy, owning lots of money, cars and wearing lots of expensive clothes with gold chains. On the reverse in many Rap video particularly old rap from the 90's we notice the rappers in baggy clothes, being associated with drugs, gang crimes, guns etc. In both style we normally notice lot of hand gestures when rapping and eye contact with the camera. Women are also seen in skimpy outfits dressed provocativly because they are a 'pretty' desired object for men. Examples from this music video include:
Here we see 50 Cent driving an expensive sports car. Cars are commonly used in RnB music videos as they demonstrate the artists wealth, wealth is a common convention in the RnB genre which relates back to Goodwins therory that music videos demonstarte genre characteristics.
50 Cent opens the door to his mansion and he then see numerous women all dressed in little clothing relating back to the common convention in RnB that women are mens objects and they can have them whenever they want. They are somewhat displaying and show casing themselves to the men.
Here was can see 50 Cent dressed in an expensive fur coat with a dimond gold chain. This fits into the common RnB Rap convention that rappers are wealthy and wear expensive clothes. This fits into the RnB genre proving Goodwin's first theory. We can also notice hoe he keep using hand gestures when rapping, another common characteristic used in RnB rap music videos.
We can also notice the relationships between the visuals and lyrics within this video, for example:
'I'll be the love doctor' the woman is dressed in a nurses costume, therefore visuals are fitting the lyrics again.
Music videos must feature many close ups of artists to promote them:
Her is a close up of 50 Cent, this proves Goodwin's theory, promoting 50 Cent as the artist to the audience, so they know it's by 50 Cent.
A close up/ midshot of Olivia, again promoting the artist.
Artists develop iconography throughout their work:
50 Cent is known for his 'flash' videos featuring expensive clothes, chains and cars to show his success as well as always featuring numerous women in minimal clothes. These are what make his videos iconic.
There is the frequent notion of looking:
This attractive woman is show gazing over to 50 Cent, which indicates that he is very attractive and desirable. She is also looking in a very lustful way.
Olivia is looking straight at the camera as if she's looking at you, the audience.
50 Cent is shown looking back at a woman, this notion of looking indicates that he is lusting over her.
We can conclude that the notion of looking is used show desire over someone or to direct the singing at the audience.
There is often intertexual reference:
This apple is died into chocolate by a women. We can link this back to Adam and Eve, Eve made Adam eat the apple which caused them to get kicked out of The Garden of Eden this suggests that women are the only fault in men, they make them do bad things therefore, by dipping this apple in chocolate we can link it to the idea that women are bad and the only fault in men.
Beyonce - Single Ladies
The song and music video of single ladies fall under the music genre of Pop, typically in Popp music video we notice certain features and characteristics, these being dance routines, lots of close ups on the singers face, if it is a female singer like Beyonce they will usually be dressed in minimal clothing and there will be many camera shots showing their full body.
The first thing we see is a long shot of Beyonce and her backing dancers, Beyonce in the middle because she is that artist/most important. Having a dance routine is a common characteristic of the Pop genre. Beyonce and the dancers are also shown wearing little clothing, heels and leotards, this also fits into the characteristics of the Pop genre.
A common characteristic is close up shots on the singers face in op videos, here it is a close up shot of Beyonce and the backing dancer however, Beyonce is more 'lit up' indicating that she is the most important person within the video, fitting the genres characteristics,
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals:
'If you liked then you should of put a ring on it' The silhouette of Beyonce and the dancers with their hands in the air suggest the ring on their finger. By using the silhouette effect it indicates that they are gone/untouchable to you now because you didn't 'put a ring on it'. By paring this image with that image they are proving Goodwin's 2nd theory.
There is a relationship with music and visuals:
Throughout the entire video Beyonce and the dancers are dancing in time with the music and doing fast up beat moves to fit the face paced beats. By fitting the dancing to the music the music video is fitting into the typical Pop genre by syncing the dancing in time with the music.
The need for close ups on the artist numerous times is needed for the record labels to make money form the artist:
As shown previously there are many close up on Beyonce, this is done so the audience watching the video know it's a beyonce song.
The notion of looking is used frequently:
Beyonce frequently looks at the camera when dancing, this is down because it give off the effect that she is singing to you. A common feature used in Pop music videos because it makes the audience feel like the singer is directly singing to them, it feels more personal.
Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
Arctic Monkeys are a rock/indie rock band. The genre of rock/indie rock music videos carry many characteristics. Videos are normally performance based. We notice close ups instruments and mid shots or other camera shots of the musicians playing them. There are often many images of the crowd and the lead singer looking out the crowd singing, we can also notice the crowd 'throwing sings' meaning throwing their hands and arms in the air making various different signs. These of which all are shown in the Arctic Monkeys music video.
Establishing shot of the band with their instruments at hand.
Close up on lead singer to show his importance in the band.
Close up on the guitar to show the importance of instruments, very typical in the rock genre.
There is relationships between visuals and the lyrics:
Because most rock genre videos are performance based the only relationship between the visuals and the lyrics is the lead singer singing the song into the microphone.
The demand of the record label will result in many close ups on the artist:
There are many close us on the lead singer, Alex Turner so the audience know who the lead singer is and can form a relationship, there are also close ups on the other band members so they can be recognized to. Because Arctic Monkeys are signed to an independent labels like most British Indie rock bands the labels will want the band shown as much as possible so they become recognised.
The artist will develop iconography throughout their work:
Arctic Monkeys are known for their performance based videos therefore instruments are always shown and the band themselves, this is very iconic in their music genre.
There is the frequent notion of looking:
Unlike the Pop and RnB genre Alex Turner isn't looking into the camera and live audience to look desirable and sexy he is looking at them because he wants the crowd to feels involved and excited because it's a live performance.
There is no intertexual reference within this music video because it is just performance,
Goodwin's seven theories can be applied to all genres of music and some are used more than others, but predominately they all follow these 7 theories one way or another. Some are used to represent different meanings within the genre but as a whole thy can all be applied to the majority of music videos.
